Organize Information/Knowledge
Definition
The mental model people use to structure all the knowledge.
Why?
Students perform better when their knowledge organization matches the requirements of the task (alignment)
How to?
Do
- Break down experts' knowledge/core task to uncover the knowledge organizations that best support the tasks. (Ambrose et al., 2010, p. 48-49).
- Concept map activities as a formative assessment
- Use contrasting and boundary cases to highlight organizing features
- Use analogies to encourage integration of component skills
- Provide students with advanced knowledge framework to encourage information organization
- Knowledge structure can be a metacognitive learning goal.
Do NOT
- Use one organization for all tasks
- There is no One-size-fits-all. Knowledge organization should match the task
